Pen Publishing Interactive is Celebrating Wichita’s 150th Birthday
On July 21st 2020, our great city of Wichita, Kansas is celebrating its 150th Birthday! In the beginning, our city was a major cattle shipping center. Centrally located near the river and along major railway lines, Wichita was an ideal spot to settle. This is still true to this day. Wichita is a prime location for families, businesses, arts, and industry. We are also the Air Capitol of the World, which is a pretty noteworthy achievement. The city has grown and evolved tremendously over the years and there are many things about Wichita that deserve to be celebrated. Wichita has a vibrant business community that we are proud to be a part of.

We Love Wichita
The best part of doing business in Wichita is the sense of togetherness. Our location right off Douglas puts us right in the heart of the city. The downtown revitalization has been exciting to watch over the years. With the addition of flowerpots and art installations, downtown is becoming more beautiful and alive every day. We can easily walk to local restaurants for lunch or for drinks after work. On those walks, it’s common to pass by a new mural or business we hadn’t noticed before. There are always new and exciting things to discover in Wichita. Some of our team members have volunteered to share some of their local favorites below!
The Pen Team’s Local Favorites
Steve: I love Wichita! Unlike bigger cities, it's so easy to commute to work and about anywhere else I need to go. I am also a huge
Wichita State Shockers fan. I love Shockers basketball! What a great blessing that we have a growing and modern university located right here in Wichita. I also enjoy the many locally owned restaurants such as
Ziggy's Pizza,
River City Brewery, and
The Monarch. I am a foodie and I love to BBQ. My wife has banned me from buying more grills and smokers. But she didn't say no to BBQ spices, accessories and cooking classes at
All Things BBQ. (Don't tell her, but I would love to have a
Yoder Smoker or... Santa, please bring me a Yoder Smoker for Christmas.) Wichita is a good-sized city, yet small enough to be friendly for businesses and people.
Rhonda: As I love history, one of my favorite places to visit is the Wichita-
Sedgwick County Historical Museum located on 204 S. Main Street in the heart of downtown Wichita. I enjoy traveling back through time to see how Wichita began from a trading post started around 1868 by J.R. Mead on the Arkansas River to where it is today. I also like to walk through the downtown streets of Wichita with my camera and capture architectural details and old signs painted on buildings. One of my favorite painted signs is located on 616 E. Douglas Ave. in an alley now known as the
Gallery Alley. If you look closely, you can see “Running Water” at the bottom of the painted sign that was for a hotel a long time ago.
Karla: The local Wichita restaurant scene is great but
Nifty Nut House is a city treasure. Thousands of chocolates, nuts, snack mixes and candy to explore. Pickup a treat and explore the downtown urban art and riverfront. Then, stop by
The Dockum for a handcrafted cocktail to sip.
Eloy: I enjoy many things about Wichita, but these are some of the places that are my ‘go-to’. If my wife and I are going on a date, we enjoy going to
Sabor in Old Town because their churrasco steak is amazing plus you can’t go wrong with their plantain chips. I’m also a book lover and enjoy going to
Watermark Books & Cafe to find my next read. Lastly, one of my favorite places to go for coffee in Wichita is
Reverie Coffee Roasters.
Bethany: I love all the local businesses and restaurants in Wichita! My absolute favorite is
La Galette French Cafe. It's so cute inside and their food is great. Their desserts are also pretty and delicious. I also love that I can walk to
The Spice Merchant from work. Their coffee is great and there are so many pretty and unique items to look at. I can’t go to the Spice Merchant without walking down to
The Workroom as well. I love how they support local artists and there's always something new and unique I hadn't seen before!
